Cod liver oil

Cod liver oil is a food supplement derived from the liver of the codfish. As with most fatty fish oils, cod liver oil contains Omega-3 fatty acids, which are especially important for healthy heart and brain function.

The difference between fish oil and cod liver oil is that, as the name suggests, cod liver oil is derived from cod livers, whereas fish oil is derived from the bodies of several types of fish. Another significant difference is that cod liver oil contains the fat-soluble vitamins A and D while fish oil does not normally.

What are the benefits of cod liver oil?

For generations, cod liver oil has been seen as an important contributor to overall good health. Among the main benefits of cod liver oil is the variety of essential and important nutrients that it contains:

Omega-3 fatty acids

The Omega-3 fatty acids eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) play an important role in supporting heart health and the normal functioning of the brain, respectively.

Vitamin A

Vitamin A contributes to the normal function of the immune system as well as to the maintenance of normal skin and vision.

Vitamin D

Vitamin D contributes to normal absorption/utilisation of calcium as well as to the maintenance of normal bones.

Most cod liver oil is extracted from the livers of Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua). Cod liver oil has been used for centuries to support good health.

In its purest form, high-quality cod liver oil is a good source of Omega-3 fatty acids (including the all-important EPA and DHA), as well as vitamin A and vitamin D. Building on over 80 years of experience producing high-quality cod liver oil and fish oil products, today’s range of Seven Seas cod liver oil supplements are often enriched with other essential vitamins and minerals to provide additional health support and contribute to everyday good health.

The UK government suggests we should aim to eat at least two portions of fish a week. In order to ensure an appropriate intake of essential Omega-3 nutrients, one of these portions should be oily fish.

For those who don’t like the taste of oily fish, a Seven Seas cod liver oil supplement is a good alternative.

Cod liver oil and cod liver oil supplements (e.g. cod liver oil capsules or cod liver oil plus multivitamins) can be used by many people, including;

• Those who do not enjoy eating fish and so find it difficult to achieve optimal Omega-3 fatty acids intake from their regular diet.

• Those who enjoy fish but are keen to ensure that they are getting as much Omega-3 fatty acids as their body needs (e.g. to support specific health objectives, such as heart health).

• Those seeking to take the fat-soluble vitamins in a good bioavailable form

Always seek advice from your pharmacist or doctor if you are uncertain about your specific needs or situation. Supplementation recommendations may vary during pregnancy and while breastfeeding. Please see here for more information about supplements for expectant or breastfeeding mothers.
