Healthy children = happy parents

Knowing your little ones are getting all the nutrients they need is one less thing to worry about

Childhood might be a magical time, but for parents it’s often fraught with worry. Are your children getting enough sleep? Stimulated enough? Toilet trained? Ooopsie! Making sure they eat a healthy balanced diet is a good place to start. Experts recommend a balance of protein-rich foods, healthy fats, complex carbohydrates, and fresh fruit and vegetables for optimal health. This will ensure your child is getting all the nutrients they need to thrive. Like omega-3 oils for example, which are vital for normal growth, including brain development and function (oily fish like salmon and mackerel are particularly good sources of these essential fatty acids). Vitamins are very important, too. Vitamin A for example plays an important role in eye health and good vision. Carrots are a great source of beta-carotene (which the body converts to vitamin A), and make a great snack for little ones when eaten raw. Vitamin D (found in eggs, and oily fish) is important for calcium absorption and strong bones, while vitamin C (citrus fruits, red peppers, strawberries and broccoli) plays a role in the development of healthy gums and a strong immune system. B vitamins (found in whole grains, wholemeal bread), meanwhile, help maintain energy levels and a healthy nervous system. Of course, children won’t always eat the food you put on their plate – and let’s face it most of it ends up on the floor anyway. That’s why giving them a nutritional supplement can help, whether an everyday multivitamin or an extra boost of key nutrients when colds or tummy bugs strike. Choose one that comes in a syrup or fruity gum, and your little one will be only too happy to swallow it. Which means you can stop stressing and enjoy these precious years… give or take the odd tantrum.
