Keeping in Shape: Easy-to-Follow Tips To Help You Stay Young

Staying physically fit is important at any age. As we grow older, regular exercise and good nutrition become even more essential, to keep our bodies and minds running correctly.

Research has shown that regular exercise and proper nutrition:

- boosts energy

- helps control your weight

- improves heart health

- helps you sleep better at night

- improves your mood.

Competition is a great way to get your heart pumping. Joining an after work sports league can be good motivation for getting in top shape. It doesn’t matter if it’s five side football, volleyball, basketball or badminton, as long as you enjoy it. If your office doesn’t have an organized sports team, you can usually find plenty of options in your area through websites.

Dance classes are a wonderful way to get your pulse racing. If you live near a big city it should be easy to find a club that offers Salsa or Tango lessons.

Pretty much any style of dancing can be a fun and effective way to get and stay in shape. Roni Tarver, an American High School teacher lost over 9 and half stone in 14 months by participating in Zumba dance sessions. According to Roni, she loved every minute of it: "You really feel like you're in a club, dancing with people, but you don't have a hangover in the morning. At the end of it, you feel awesome, you're exhausted, and you can go back and do it tomorrow if you want. It's good for your soul, if you ask me."

Whatever you decide to do, don’t ignore stretching and warming up. Stretching exercises are the cornerstone of any fitness regimen. To increase flexibility and allow easier movement, you should stretch for at least 10 minutes a day. Beginner Pilates and yoga classes focus heavily on stretching. Once you learn the proper techniques you can easily do it on your own.

To increase your heart strength and lung capacity you'll need to engage in aerobic exercises. A reasonable goal is to devote at least 45 minutes a day on activities like walking briskly, biking, swimming, or to find some easy exercises to do at home. You can always increase your heart rate just by washing the car, gardening, raking leaves, even hoovering or by doing other chores around the house. Before starting an exercise plan, consult your doctor to find out what a suitable workout for you would be, especially if you have a previous medical condition.
