What Are The Benefits Of EPA And DHA?

In this fat-obsessed world, it’s good to know that there’s one that we shouldn’t cut out: omega- 3 fatty acids. In fact, they make up an essential part of a healthy diet.1 There are two particularly important fatty acids too – eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). EPA and DHA have different roles and actions in the body.2 Not only do our bodies need these fatty acids to function, but they also deliver certain health benefits. DHA contributes to the maintenance of normal vision and brain function3 while DHA and EPA together contribute to the normal function of the heart.4

What is a fatty acid?

Fatty acids are the building blocks of the fat in our bodies and in the food we eat. During digestion, the body breaks down fats into fatty acids, which can then be absorbed into the blood. Our bodies can’t produce EPA or DHA. The only source is food.

Sources of DHA and EPA

These beneficial omega-3 fatty acids can be found in oily fish – such as salmon, fresh tuna, mackerel and herring – and the government recommends that we eat at least two portions of fish a week, one of which should be oily.5 And while you can choose from fresh, frozen, smoked and canned fish, it is wise to remember that smoked and canned fish may contain higher levels of salt, so always check the food labels to choose the lower salt varieties.6
