Vitamin B12 is part of the B complex family of vitamins, which help maintain a healthy body.
It’s found in all foods of animal origin, including milk, cheese and other dairy products, meats, poultry, eggs and fish. Vegetarians could look to breakfast cereals or seaweed as a source of B12, although studies vary as to the amounts contained.
Vitamin B12 is necessary for normal cell division – such as cell division required in the gastrointestinal tract. The major functions of the gastrointestinal tract are ingestion, digestion, absorption and defecation.
Other benefits of Vitamin B12 are the maintenance of healthy blood cells and the preservation of normal structure and function of the neurological system.
The B vitamins were originally thought to be a single substance, but Nutritionists now know that it’s a rich cocktail that helps our body to work in a whole host of ways.
