Health in Later Life : Seven Seas Health Zone

Eating well and staying active into old age will help you live life to the full.

Energy requirements might diminish in later years if physical activity is limited but your need to take in the right nutrients remains the same.

Remaining active can help to look after both physical and mental health. Activity in later years might mean more gentle exercise such as gardening, housework and walking to the shops.

Getting enough fibre will help maintain good bowel health as will drinking plenty of fluids. Eight glasses of water a day is recommended and is necessary for healthy kidneys.

It's important in later years to ensure you are getting enough iron. Make sure your iron intake is sufficient by eating red meat and foods from non-meat sources (such as fortified cereals, dried fruit, pulses and green leafy vegetables) every day. Absorption of iron from a meal containing non-meat sources is maximised by consuming foods rich in Vitamin C at the same time (such as a glass of fruit juice, fresh fruit or vegetables).
