Healthy Diet – What Should My Teenager Be Eating?

The teenage years are a time of great change. Both physiologically and psychologically, the transition from child towards adult is a massive leap. It takes a lot out of your child and that’s why during these years, it’s important to make sure they enjoy a healthy diet.

  • They need plenty of starchy carbohydrates - bread, rice, pasta, breakfast cereals, chapattis, couscous and potatoes
  • Lots of fresh fruit and vegetables - at least five portions every day
  • At least two to three portions of dairy products, such as milk, yoghurt, fromage frais and pasteurised cheeses
  • Two servings of protein, such as meat, fish, eggs, beans and pulses
  • They need to cut right down on unhealthy, fatty foods
  • Reduce those sugar-rich food and drinks and drink more water instead

As we’ve mentioned already, they need to eat regular meals, including breakfast, as it can provide essential nutrients and improve concentration levels. With teenagers who always seem to be dashing out of the house and off somewhere, getting them to eat regular meals may not always work out.

Girls need iron

Girls especially need iron as they can be prone to lower iron levels once their periods start. If you think their diet may be lacking iron, consider giving them a multivitamin.

Eating habits can become a bit of a worry – try making mealtimes a family thing, get in the kitchen, get the kids involved to create a dish together and nurture their enthusiasm for delicious foods
