Your teenager at school

School is probably the most important part of their life right now. Some teenagers might disagree with that, but the fact is that school is where the majority of their friendships are formed and therefore where their social skills are honed. It’s the place where they do their hard work to do well in their exams, which in turn can help them achieve the great things they want to do in later life. But children really do work harder and more effectively at school when there’s lots of help coming from home.

Some teenagers are great self-motivators and seem to plough through coursework and later exams with relish. Yet some find the pressures of school and academic life more difficult to deal with. It could be problems with concentration, it could be ‘I don’t like that teacher’, or it could be the fact that your child is sitting next to a disruptive child. The key thing is to keep a dialogue going with your child through these important years just so that you’re aware of how they’re doing and how much extra help they may need. And if you think there’s a problem that your child’s hiding, don’t hesitate - go speak to the school and together you can work on sorting it out.

It’s a trying time for a young person going through secondary school, but armed with a healthy diet, regular exercise, reasonable amounts of sleep and consistent help from you, it’s going to be so much more rewarding and enjoyable for them.

Girls need iron

Girls especially need iron as they can be prone to lower iron levels once their periods start. If you think their diet may be lacking iron, consider giving them a multivitamin.

Eating habits can become a bit of a worry – try making mealtimes a family thing, get in the kitchen, get the kids involved to create a dish together and nurture their enthusiasm for delicious foods
