Your baby or toddler’s good health and growth

It’s all part of growing up healthy and strong. But as parents we worry about our kids. As a baby, we worry whether they’re putting on enough weight; two years later and we’re worried they’re putting on too much.

Yet you shouldn’t be too concerned, as during the early baby stages, your health visitor will monitor the weight and general health of your baby giving you helpful and reassuring advice.

As your baby develops into a toddler and starts to grow physically and develop mentally, in many ways it becomes easier to monitor how they are. You can ask them how they feel and they’ll let you know.

Growing isn’t just about getting bigger or taller. For a young child it’s also about acquiring new experiences. Learning from them, practising them, moving on and making progress. It’s as much about the brain as it is about the body. So spend time with your child helping to stimulate their mind through play. Simple stuff like getting them to face you in the pram, so they can watch your expressions and practice their communication skills will help with their development. Feed their mind as well as you feed their tummy and you can be sure you’re providing them with the best head start.

top tip!

Between ages 1 – 3 years - don’t go overboard on high-fibre food such as wholemeal pasta – young stomachs can’t process fibre as easily as adults which can affect your little one’s mineral absorption.

top tip!

At 1 year old – your child can eat pretty much the same food as you, but prepare yourself for them being fussy and inconsistent when it comes to what they like.

top tip!

To help a 1-3 year old get their calcium - the Dairy Council recommends three servings of full fat milk or other dairy produce a day [like a beaker of milk, a yoghurt or grated cheese on pasta].
